Is this trip right for you?
This trip will be perfect for you if you consider yourself a “traveller,” rather than a “tourist.” It is about experiencing the culture, geography and history, not just the beaches, of southern Mexico and the Yucatan. You enjoy getting off the beaten path, interacting with locals, understanding their way of life, all while travelling through stunning countryside. And you enjoy some action, like swimming in waterfall pools or a cenote. You like the idea of taking in as much of the country as possible in the short time available. Comfortable accommodation is adequate, you don’t need luxury. And you love meeting fellow travellers from around the world. Please see Our Style for more of what to expect on our trips.
Day 1: Meet your fellow adventurers and tour leader at 6 pm at the joining hotel in downtown Mexico City.
Day 2: An early departure on public transport out of Mexico City to visit the mighty ruins of Teotihuacan! It’s close by, only around 45 minutes by bus. We then return to Mexico City, where you will have a free afternoon.
Day 3: Departing the hotel early, we will head in taxis to one of the biggest bus terminals in Mexico, where we will ride in a first class bus to Oaxaca! The journey is approximately 7 hours.
Day 4: Today is a free day for you to enjoy everything that Oaxaca has to offer.
Day 5: A morning departure will see us in our private vehicle. We have a full day visiting Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua, the town of Tule and a Mezcal Distillery!
Day 6: A morning departure from our hotel, we will be transferred to the airport. A short, one-hour flight takes us to San Cristobal De Las Casas.
Day 7: We depart this morning for a unique visit to two Mayan Villages, San Juan Chamula and Zincanantan.
Day 8: A morning departure sees us leave the cooler temperatures of San Cristobal De Las Casas and head for the heat of the jungle. Enroute to Palenque we will be stopping off at Agua Azul and Misol Ha.
Day 9: A full morning includes a guided tour in the magical jungles of Chiapas and guided tour into Palenque.
Day 10: Leaving the State of Chiapas this morning in a first class bus, we travel into Tabasco and onto Campechi, where we catch our first glimpse of the Caribbean. Our destination is Merida, a warm and inviting city.
Day 11: Today you have the option (pre-booking required) of visiting the impressive archaeological sites of Uxmal and Kabah or the cenotes of Santa Barbara.
Day 12: We depart early for Chichen Itza, the Mayan site we’ve been waiting for. After our guided visit and some impressive photos we continue on to our final destination, Playa del Carmen.
Day 13: The trip ends for those finishing in Playa del Carmen, or a free day for those continuing on to Antigua, Guatemala.
